Smartvatten Monitoring quickly uncovered a hidden leak in the area of Quality Hotel Sveitsi in Hyvinkää. The situation demonstrated how important it is to monitor water consumption even in properties with low usage – and how technology can support responsible choices.
Quality Hotel Sveitsi is a well-known conference and leisure hotel nestled in nature in Hyvinkää. Part of the international Strawberry chain, it offers high-quality facilities for accommodation, meetings, and leisure. The property complex of Quality Hotel Sveitsi is diverse, with numerous water points that make monitoring water consumption a challenge – especially since some areas are not in the hotel’s direct use. A clear example of this occurred in spring 2025.

One morning, the Smartvatten system alerted to unusual water usage: water was flowing at a rate of about 2–3 liters per minute.
We reacted immediately and asked our cleaning staff to check the hotel rooms, says Hotel Director Tuija Lehtojoki. When nothing abnormal was found in the rooms, the search expanded to the entire hotel area.
Since there are other operators on the premises besides the hotel itself, the leak wasn’t immediately traceable. The property maintenance team began systematically narrowing down the issue by closing off water lines. One building on the site was out of use and had no active operations – but when its water line was shut off, the alarm stopped.
The leak disappeared entirely the next night, and we were able to confirm that the issue was in that building. When we closed the valves in the restrooms, the leak was finally located in two different bathroom fixtures, Lehtojoki explains.
The situation was resolved within the same day – but it could have gone unnoticed for weeks or even months.
This was a building that isn’t in regular use. Without Smartvatten’s service, the leak could have continued for a long time, Lehtojoki notes.
The case sparked a new level of understanding regarding water consumption monitoring.
Leaks should always be treated with the seriousness they deserve. Even smaller leaks must be taken seriously.
It is important for us to meet our environmental targets and act responsibly. This situation clearly showed that we are on the right track," concludes Lehtojoki.

Thanks to this case, Quality Hotel Sveitsi now has a better understanding of the importance of including even less-used buildings in water monitoring – and of identifying potential leaks in time. At the same time, the service supports the hotel’s goal of reducing its environmental footprint.
